TUTORING PROJECT

Six members of APJC have been trained by the librarian and teacher consultant at Zerger Elementary in Westminster, Colorado to tutor "at risk" children in reading, writing and math.  We started the week of September 26th, 2005 and have been scheduled to volunteer on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year.

Zerger started the "Homework Club" this year to give children the opportunity to have one-on-one assistance with a tutor (after school hours) for improving their performance in the classroom.  During these first two weeks, the tutors from APJC  have been welcomed most heartily by both teachers and students.  There are more students needing help than tutors providing it.  If you are interested in helping these children who are enthusiastic to improve academically, please contact Larry Seid at lnmseid@comcast.net.  There is a one hour orientation as well as a commitment of one hour a week.

The Arvada Peace and Justice Commission began as an outgrowth of the January 2003 Peace Rally at McAvoy Park in Arvada, Colorado.

Then, we shared a deeply felt need to speak out against the impending war in Iraq.

Now, we unite to address community, national and global needs which demand action for peace and justice. Among our many efforts are the following:

  • The creation and disbursement of anti-war and pro-peace buttons
  • The sponsorship of cutting-edge speakers, films and educational forums
  • Voter registration drives and voter integrity programs
  • Community-wide prayer vigils for peace and acceptance of all cultures
  • Letter writing campaigns to state and congressional legislators
  • Advocacy and involvement with PEACE JAM, Arvada's youth peace movement
  • Participation in activities focused on the abolition of nuclear weapons
  • Promotion of an alternative perspective of military recruitment among young people
  • We also provided support for some of our members who built houses in Juarez, Mexico for the poor as well as other members who worked in Africa for clean water systems, medical assistance and educational supplies for children.

Future plans include

  •  a possible Peace Festival for Arvada
  • the development of an Arvada Community Martin Luther King Day Celebration
  •  Involvement in some of Arvada's neediest schools.

We are an ecumenical movement, which represents many beliefs and persuasions with a strong desire to serve our community.
