From: Betty Goebel
APJC has adopted missile site M10 for a "visitation" on
Saturday, July 27, at 11 am, with rally to follow in Stoneham, CO from
12:30-1:30.
The centralized website at this the web address below is outstanding for
it's completeness. You are strongly encouraged to read it
thoroughly!
http://www.coloradopeace.org/2003/Adopt-a-Silo/
Maps and detailed directions to the M10 silo are at:
http://www.coloradopeace.org/MissileMaps/Flights-JLMN.html
Critical info:
Expect extreme heat! Bring lots of water and your lunch.
Dress coolly but wear long pants and boots (poisonous rattles have
already struck up date). You might want to bring shorts to change
into later. Bring a hat! Bring a sign if you want one.
Sunscreen and bug repellent may also improve your visit! There
will be no bathroom facilities at the silos. There are no cell phone
towers so don't expect to use your cell phone.

APJC, along with others will be staging a
peaceful and strictly legal protest action at one of the 49 nuclear
missile silos in Weld and Logan Counties. This is the day after
the sentencing of the 3 nuns who were convicted of "threatening the
national defense" by a civil disobediance action at one such silo.
You will recall some discussion and letter writing in APJC about this
situation.
Other peace organizations will be at other silos, hopefully covering all
49. The central planning for this is well underway. People
are to be at the silos by 11 a.m., and a centralized rally in the small
town of Stoneham will occur at 12:30. Due to the distance
involved, it's pretty much an all day activity. (It's a 2 hour
drive to the CLOSEST silo!)
More details will be known (location and directions to "our"
silo, etc.) late next week. Participants should plan on bringing
WATER WATER WATER, sunscreen and maybe insect repellant. Most
people will try to car pool and APJC will help out with that.
Call Pat Gacnik (303 421-0467) for details, but she'll be away until
Monday evening, July 21. You can also check out the information at
the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center's website: www.rmpjc.org,
select "adopt a silo" link from the home page. This is
primarily a site for planners of the silo actions, so there will be a
lot of details you don't need to worry about. More email to
APJC will follow once Pat is back and gets more details. The final
planning meeting will be on July 23, and Pat will be there collecting
all the need-to-know details, so expect more email at that time.

July 2, 2003. RMPJC - After filling our tummies with a
wonderful pot-luck supper with pasta prepared by Judith and filling our
souls with poetry read by Alan Wartes, Marilyn Krisl and Lorna
Decervantes, a large group of enthusiastic supporters continued the
planning of the Adopt-a-Silo action for July 26th. In addition to
the action on the 26th there will be a vigil in Denver on July
24th when Alan Wartes, Peace Poet, arrives at the capitol on his
walk from Gunnison. Anyone interested in helping to set this up
should contact Alan at awartes@gunnison.com
or 970-641-2199. The nuns are giving a press conference at 8:00
am, July 25 on the steps of the courthouse. They will not be
speaking during their sentencings which occur at 10:00, 11:00 and 1:30
but will give their statements outside at 8:00. A continued
presence on the courthouse steps is planned from 8:00 – 1:30.
Anyone interested in helping coordinate that should contact Bill at bsulzman@juno.com.
The current plan for the Adopt-a-Silo action on July 26th is as
follows:
Purpose: We are planning this action to support and honor
the nuns the day after they begin their prison sentences by carrying
forward their message to the American public regarding the illegal
existence and dangers of the 49 nuclear missile silos in Colorado.
As Bill says, “You can’t Silence the Sisters. Just as
Neighborhood Crime Watch groups keep an eye on their neighborhood, we
will look for and point out dangerous and illegal activity in our
community.”
Principles: The action will be non-violent, legal and
promote a peaceful, positive image. We hope to create an
atmosphere indicative of how the world can be: creative, supportive,
joyful, inclusive, and respectful.
Outcome/Vision: We hope to receive positive local, state
and national media coverage that heightens the awareness of the nuclear
missiles, the US’s current policies and directions, and the viability
of supporting International Law as a means for a more peaceful world.
We hope that the participants as well as the public will be inspired and
motivated to continue to work for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
This action will be included in a documentary being made about the nuns
and the legal, social and moral implications of their civil resistance.
The documentary will reach a broad audience through television, film and
educational products. For more info on documentary, see www.littlevoice.org/n8missile.

(Overnight camping available in Pawnee National Grassland Campground on
Friday, July 25th for those who wish to go up early. Materials for
adopters can be picked up there if they haven’t been obtained already.
Group sites reserved for up to 70 people. Contact Cynda at 303
499-7038 or cyndaca@hotmail.com
if interested in camping. Located just off Hwy 14 on Hwy 77 on the
way to the missile silos if coming from I25)
11:00 am: Groups Actions at the 49 missile silos 49
groups (might be formal organizations or informal groups such as
doctors, neighbors, farmers, fishermen, musicians, etc) begin their
action at assigned silos. Actions are planned by the individual
groups within the guidelines of the purpose and principles.
Examples are: singing, prayers, meditation, picnics, drumming,
teach-in, painting, healing ceremonies, art projects, letter writing,
etc.
Groups are encouraged to make their actions highly visible and creative
with color, flags, banners, flowers, balloons, kites. All
participants wear hot pink signs taped to their back saying “Citizen
Weapon Inspectors”. While actions are taking place, a plane is
flying over the silo field with a banner that says: We found the
WMDs – HERE ¯” Actions will vary in length depending on
the location since it can take up to an hour to get to the larger
gathering at 12:30. Groups will secure their “missile” (being
provided) to the top of their car labeled with CITIZEN WEAPON INSPECTOR
signs and proceed to the larger gathering
12:30 p.m. –1:30 The Gathering All groups gather at the
Community Building in Stoneham (on Hwy 14) in all their glory – signs,
props, etc. There will be singing, speakers and performances.
It will end with some sort of prayer and symbolic disarmament of the
“missiles”.
Other particulars:
Notification of Authorities: There was
group consensus that Weld and Logan County Sheriff Departments will be
notified and their cooperation sought to ensure legality of the action.
A copy of the written notification/agreement will be sent to the press
ahead of time. There was strong feeling against the
formal notification of the Department of Defense since they are the ones
doing the illegal activity that we are bearing witness to.
Ken and Mag Seaman, magandken@aol.com,
303-986-1773, have agreed to be responsible for notifying authorities.
Soliciting Adopters: Everyone is encouraged
to contact any groups they know to see if there is interest in adopting
a silo. It does not have to be a formal group – just a few individuals
with a theme. Have them contact Cynda cyndaca@hotmail.com,
303 499-7038, for information or to sign up. In addition,
Ben, Benjamin.Herbert@colorado.edu
and Nate (2 volunteers with RMPJC) are calling an extensive list of
organizations around the state to solicit silo adopters.
Information Packets: Packets will be given to all
“adopters” with the following information:
Purpose, Principles and Outcomes
Signed Agreement Statement
Maps and Directions to their designated silos
Idea Sheet for actions
Citizen Weapon Inspector Signs
Information and particulars about the area (Janet Roberts, robertsjanet@yahoo.com,
303-444-8173)
Idea sheet on ways to be respectful and a peacemaker (You, younjackson@aol.com,
303-447-2327)

The Gathering: Wendy Rochman rochman@mac.com
, 303 443-6363, has agreed to coordinate the larger gathering at
Stoneham. The Free Range Puppets will MC as well as perform during
the event. Karen Trietsch, rosie_k@comcast.net,
303 384-3819, has taken on the role of contacting potential speakers.
Anyone with ideas or connections can contact her directly.
Media: Stephanie Tidwell has agreed to
coordinate the media outreach. She has lots of experience.
Rich Andrews, Angela Frenier angela.fernier@achsc.edu
and Karen Trietsch rosie_k@comcast.net,
will also be working on media. Jim Morris jim@jimmorris.com
had the idea and has offered to produce t-shirts that say something like
Save the Sisters or You Can’t Silence the Sisters on the front and
Citizen Weapon Inspector on the back. These could be made
available at all the events as a fundraiser for the sisters or related
need.
Current Update: The following groups are signed up for
silos: Code Pink, Raging Grannies, Halliburton 20, Women from
Iliff, Free Range Puppets, Women in Black, Rocky Mtn Buddhist Peace
Fellowship, WILPF of Greeley. In addition there are several groups
from Colorado Springs who will be covering the J flight pattern.
There are also about 30 groups in process of trying to work out ways to
be involved. Not bad!
Next Meeting: There will be another organizational
meeting at RMPJC on Wed. July 9 at 7:00. At that time we will work
on:
Fine tuning the information packet
Media ideas
Contingency plans
It has also been suggested that we try for a meeting with a
representative of all 49 groups just prior to the 26th.
Thank you everybody for a great meeting. Thanks especially to
Karen Trietsch and Karima Lundquist who came up after the meeting and
offered time and energy to help and to all those who are taking on
pieces of this. There is growing excitement and enthusiasm for
this action.

Subj: schedule of events
Date of email: early July, 2003
Dear friends, please find below additional information about actions you
can take part in to support our courageous Sisters Ardeth Platte,
Carol Gilbert and Jackie Hudson before, during and after their
sentencing on July 25th. (As you must surely know, the Sisters are
facing 5-8 years in a federal penitentiary for entering a U.S. Air Force
Minuteman III Missile compound to focus attention on our country's
planet-threatening weapons of mass destruction.)
(1) Peace Poets Walk to Denver: Poet Alan Wartes will walk
from his home in Gunnison to Denver, beginning July 10th and arriving at
the State Capitol July 24th. The walk is intended to show solidarity
with the nuns and the many other demonstrators who will gather in Denver
to show their support. Alan is requesting poets to send him poems that
present "your strongest vision of a peaceful, just and sustainable
society." These poems will be presented to Governor Bill Owens in
Denver. Alan is also encouraging others to join him for all or part of
the walk, and to organize peace rallies/poetry readings both along the
route and in communities not on the route. For details, please see the
information pasted below and attached in two documents (a letter and a
route schedule).
(2) Wednesday, July 23,
the nuns will travel to the silo where they were arrested with their
supporters-everyone is welcome to come. More details to follow.
(3)Friday, June 25, at 8 a.m.
Press conference and rally at the Federal Courthouse, 19th &
Stout, Denver, where the nuns will be sentenced.
(4)Saturday, July 26,
people will travel to 49 missile silos in Colorado
to protest the nuns' sentencing. Groups will adopt a missile silo and
will recruit their members and supporters to visit that silo. Each group
can decide on their own creative action and the public will be informed
about activities that are planned at each silo. At 1 p.m., people
at
all the silos will gather together for a large action at a
designated
site. All people participating are asked to adhere to nonviolence
guidelines. No civil disobedience is planned. To help, to adopt a silo
or for

Subj: meeting related to activities around sentencing of 3 nuns
Date: 6/20/2003
I went to the meeting to plan support activites for the three nuns and
wanted to give you an update and implore your participation.
On Friday July 25th starting at 8am with their own Press Conference at
the
Federal Court House on 19th and Stout in Denver there will be an all day
vigil for the nuns.
We want to also have a visible, creative presence at all 49 missile
silos
in Colorado the morning of July 26th, with a big group to congregate on
the silo near Greeley where the nuns action took place at Noon. We
are
asking groups of at least 3-4 to adopt a site, and go to that site on
Saturday morning and creatively support the nuns in any way they can.
If
APJC wants to adopt a silo or if any of you know of other groups that
may
want to adopt please let me know asap. I have the list of sites
and
directions on how to get to them. Also I would love to hear any
creative,
media capturing ideas. We hope to contact appropriate media sources soon
and alert them to our support actions.
Peace to all of you,
Angela Frenier
Subj:
Sacred Earth and Space and Plowshares solidarity action
Date: 6/10/03
Dear Friends,
I am sending this invitation to many of the folks who
provided the terrific support at time of trial for Sisters Carol, Ardeth
and Jackie. As you know their sentencing comes up on July 25.
During
the time they were in this area, after their release April 30, they
spoke
to many who wanted to stay involved with the issues raised by their
action and trial. Over the course of that time and in subsequent
conversations I have had with them a general plan for a support action
for July 26 has taken shape. Some organizing materials have been
developed and will be available at the meeting. Peace activists in
Montana will be doing their own action in solidarity with what happens
here. And after I visit North Dakota June 20 - 22 it is hoped
something
will take share involving Americans and Canadians who live very close to
some of the MM III's in that part of the world.
After checking with a few people a meeting has been
set for June 19
at 7 PM at the AFSC Office in Denver to take a look at that plan and
decide how we might go about making it happen if we determine that it is
feasble. There is already a meeting set for July 2 in Boulder
where we
will attempt to grapple with the same issues. We have already met
in
Colorado Springs and made a commitment to our part of the proposal.
It
is hoped that a meeting can be set in Greeley very soon. The
purpose at
this Denver meeting would be to see if an ad hoc group could come
together to carry out a Denver plan and also to include some discussion
with Arvada supporters who want to be involved. I am sending this
e-mail
to a dozen or so. If you receive it and know of someone else whom
you
think would be interested in this project.please feel free to invite
them
to this exploratory meeting. I will be calling some others who do
not
have e-mail. Hopefully I will see many of you soon.
