January 8, 2004 APJC subcommittee on
Peace in the Schools met January 8 at 4:15 at the PeaceJam office. We
discussed the list of suggested activities from the Nov. meeting and
agreed to take action on three. 1. Jes has started
publicizing a third "What is Peace Jam" event to be held at
Regis on February 10 at 7:00 PM. We agreed to provide refreshments and
attend in support. Any member who can provide cookies please contact
Phyllis. If you cannot bring them
yourself we will arrange to take them to the meeting for you. It would
be great to have a good representation from the committee. 2. Jes will prepare a
press release about the need for donations to the scholarship fund to
send youth to the spring PeaceJam conference. We will circulate these at
the January Commission meeting and encourage members to get this into
church publications and our to their service groups and other contact. 3. We will explore
with the Commission the possibility of hosting movie/discussion nights
perhaps monthly rotating among area churches. Lorene tells us some
members of the Commission have already been doing this and individual
homes. Perhaps they can share their list of best movies for public
viewing. The APJC meeting is
January 13th. Meeting place is still the Arvada United Methodist Church
at 68th and Carr, and time is 7:00. We encourage the subcommittee
members to attend. First United Church of Arvada has already scheduled a Cultural
Potluck/Class Dinner for March 20 which they will open to others. We
will plan to attend and see if this is something we want to replicate at
other locations. We discussed the possibility of getting PeaceJam clubs into local
churches or forming our own club for students who can't participate
through their high school. We will pursue this further at the next
meeting. We hope to develop
these and other ideas at out next meeting. We hope all of the members
will attend at perhaps bring a friend. We need more active participation
to have this subcommittee really become a force in the Commission. Please let us know if Thursdays at 4:15 are good for you. If not please let us know what days and times would be
better. |
